Private Alexander John Ross Smith (Service number 888) was a Mentone footballer and also a lacrosse player for the Melbourne Cricket Club at the time of his enlistment. Smith served with the 5th Infantry Battalion (H Company) in the AIF.  He died and was buried at sea as a result of wounds sustained in action at Gallipoli (Dardanelles). Smith was just 22 years old at the time of death and his parents were living in Milan Street, Mentone.

Private William Penny (Service number 6427) was another well-known Mentone footballer and popular identity in the district who was killed on active service in Belgium when fighting with the 22nd Battalion in the AIF in September 1917. His mother Mrs Mackay of Florence Street Mentone had two other sons in active service at the front when she was notified that William (aged 26) had been killed.   The picture of PVT Penny was published in the Moorabbin News 27 October 1917.
