It is with great sadness that we record the recent passing of Life Member and Hall of Famer, Brett Mennie.
Brett was an integral off field part of the Mentone Football Club from the 1970s to the early 1990s. Brett’s dedication to the club and its players was legendary. He was often a trainer for two consecutive games. He ensured injured players were taken to hospital, arrangements were made for their cars to be driven home, and fundraising for them was undertaken. At the end of a long Saturday of football Brett would always be the last person out of the change rooms after ensuring they had been completely cleaned.
He also played a key role in the preservation of the history of the club by donating many photos of individual players, teams and club events that he had taken of that era and also by keeping player game records up to date.
Words others have provided to describe Brett include hard working, generous, kind, eccentric, selfless, caring, and a loyal clubman. All very fitting descriptors for him.
Brett represented the best of our unsung, behind-the-scenes worker who helped the club through difficult times. He was awarded the Best Club Person trophy in 1981, Life Membership in 1985 and was an initial inductee in the Club’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
His beloved wife Yoli had passed away some years earlier and over the past 12 months Brett’s health had deteriorated significantly after a fall. He was supported during this time by his sister Susanne and passed away on the 9th of September 2026 aged 85. A private commemorative service was held.
Rest in peace Brett. You were much loved by your football community and will be fondly remembered.
