St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers turned the half way mark of the ‘B’ section Vafa season in second place following a heart stopping win against Marcellin at Bundoora. In a high standard game the tigers through the brilliance of Andrew Scafidi stole the game by goaling with only 4 seconds left on the clock. The game opened with the home side showing the value of straight kicking and at quarter time had 4 majors on the board to the tigers 5 solitary points. With Marcellin adopting a one on one game plan the tigers were in trouble but through the efforts of Tim McColl, Robbie Swayn and Chris Richards the visitors clawed their way back and at the main break scores were locked at 33 a piece. In the third stanza the tigers gained a handy lead before Marcellin again answered with late goals. Damien Waters in a running role and Paul Groves floating between the wing and the forward line were proving a handful for Marcellin. At 3 quarter time with a lead of less than a goal coach Luke Beveridge urged his players to run the game out and half way through the final term the tigers looked to have a match winning lead but Marcellin refused lay down. When the Cardinals slammed on 5 goals the tigers looked gone but with a late goal to Robbie Swayn the game was still up for grabs. Against the flow the tigers worked the ball forward and despite the desperate efforts of a heavily stocked Marcellin defence Scafidi produced a special goal to steal the game. In Under 19’s the tigers took on Beaumaris in the top of the table clash at Brindisi St however it proved a one sided affair as the tigers under the guidance of coach Owen Lalor continued on their winning ways this time recording a thumping 71 point win. This week the tigers return to Brindisi St and host AJAX in what promises to be a stellar game. The jaccas season is on the line and only 3 weeks ago they trounced the tigers at Elsternwick Park.
