St Bedes / Mentone Tigers won a thriller by one point against local rival Old Brighton at Brindisi Street
The Tigers got off to a good start kicking the first two goals of the game and with Pete McGettigan roaming the forward line and getting plenty of the ball they looked the goods
Not to be denied, Old Brighton took control of the game and edged out to a 21 point lead at half time in an entertaining game in which first one side then the other controlled the footy
Old Brighton kicked the first goal of the second half and with a lead of 28 points things looked ominous for the Tigers but with Andrew Scafidi and Jack Hellier imposing themselves on the game the Tigers lifted and went on a goal spree kicking the next 9 goals of the game
With a 27 point lead half way through the last quarter the Tiges looked home but Old Brighton refused to accept and proceeded to kick 5 goals in 6 minutes to take the lead by 4 points at the 22 minute mark
The Tigers quickly regained the lead with a rebound goal and with their defence, led by Anthony Scafidi and Nick Corda, standing firm and with some telling marks around the ground held on in the ensuing arm-wrestle in a spine-tingling finish
The Reserves were well beaten in their first loss at home while both U19 teams and Club XVIII had good wins. The Club XVIII are on top of their division and undefeated
The Tigers are now second and play the undefeated ladder leader Old Collegians at Elsternwick Park next week
