Ladder leader Collegians thrashed St Bedes / Mentone Tigers in their top-of-the-table clash at Albert Park on Saturday.
The Tigers got the first goal of the game before Collegians with hard-running and precision kicking slammed on the next 7 to take a well-earnt 39 point lead into the first break.
Collegians, playing their home ground superbly, continued to outplay the Tigers in the second quarter but only extended their lead by a further 11 points.
After the long break the Tigers improved their performance and with Sam Anstey a shining light began to run and tackle – which had not been to the forefront in the first half – and but for some lacklustre kicking for goal would have been a little closer at the last break.
In the last quarter, SBMT kicked the first two goals but then followed an onslaught by the ladder leaders to kick 10 of the last 11 goals of the game to run out easy 92 point winners.
The U19s had a 40 point win over Old Xaverians at home to remain on top of the ladder while the Club XVIII had a 51 point loss to relinquish second place on the table and now play in the first semi final next Saturday at VAFA headquarters.
