St Bedes / Mentone Tigers missed a great opportunity to go a game and a half clear in second place when they lost to old rival De La Salle at Waverley Park on Saturday.
Into the breeze, the Tigers made a great start with strong tackling, effective handball and hard running to kick 18 points clear only for De La to kick the last two goals of the quarter to turn 6 points in arrears.
With Brett Collins starring up forward (5 goals), the Tigers looked a very good unit but De La weren’t to be denied and played excellent position football and attacked with great run, purpose and disposal.
After half time the Tigers looked in all sorts of trouble early but re-grouped, with Jonathon Kane outstanding in defence, to kick the last 3 goals of the quarter and turn just 8 points behind with a 4 goal breeze at their backs.
In the last the Tigers took the initiative with early goals to go to a 6 point lead but
The Tiges play University Blacks at Melbourne Uni in the penultimate round of the home and away season with both sides having everything to play for, with St Bedes / Mentone Tigers trying to cement a place in the final four and the double chance and Uni attempting to avoid relegation.
