• St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers downed Old Scotch by 12 points in a torrid affair in the traditional VAFA Premier Division ANZAC Day clash at Brindisi Street on Sunday after being in front all day. After a moving ceremony commemorating the fallen, the Tigers started with their usual attack on the ball to score early goals before Scotch had caught their breath. The Cardinals regrouped but missed several ‘gettable’ shots to trail the Tigers by 17 points at the first break. With Luke Wintle and James Tyquin in great early season form, we had the ideal springboard to goal and continued to outscore the boys from Camberwell who had 9 behinds on the board before their first major finally came at the 14 minute mark of the second quarter, however, from there the Tigers continued to pile on the pressure and by half time had bounced out to a well-earned 26 point lead. After the break, Scotch came out with more of a free-wheeling game and began to sting the Mentone team on the scoreboard but with Sam Anstey, in season-best form, winning the ball out of the centre and Michael Wintle in everything the Tigers clung to a 17 point lead at the orange break notwithstanding the Cardinals’ dominance of the quarter. The last quarter was fierce and no place for the faint-hearted and with Anthony Scafidi leading a miserly defence and Luke Collins again getting plenty in and under as well as reading the play superbly, the Tigers deservedly prevailed by 12 points in another tight one. The Tigers’ Reserves won going away again in the last quarter, the Under 19s had a solid 37 point victory over Uni Blacks while the Under 18s had a resounding win against Aquinas to consolidate their position on the ladder. The Tigers’ now meet newly-promoted Old Melburnians next Saturday in a real danger game at the Junction Oval as OMs search for their first win in Premier Division after missing out in two close ones in the first 2 rounds
