St Bedes/Mentone Tigers returned to the winners list with an emphatic 62 point victory over the Blues at the Uni. From the outset it was clear that the Tigers had come to play. The run, linking handball and ferocity at the contest was outstanding. The Pats, Kean and Tyquin, were everywhere early and Chris Richards and Michael Wintle were driving the Tigers forward courtesy of some great ruck work from Luke Wintle. The 9 goals to 2 quarter time score line reflected the Tigers dominance all over the park. The mauling continued into the second quarter with Todd Bastion, Paul Wintle, Tom Garside and Dean Porter controlling things down back and orchestrating quick transitions into attack were Shaun Glennen and George Rowlands finished their team mates’ great work. Gavin Brown showed what it really means to “stand up in the tackle” while Chris Richards, Michael Wintle and Cameron Hansen carried on winning the contested footy with hardness at the ball. 17 goals to 4 at the long break and the Tiger faithful were smiling. The third quarter was a real arm wrestle with the Uni getting some structures in place, tightening up down back and starting to make head way on the scoreboard. Alex Kane was now providing another avenue to goal, Hayden Jeans was out-marking his bigger opponents and when Shaun Glennen threaded the needle on the run the crowd erupted. The ground lights went on at three quarter time and only served to further illuminate the Tiger’s dominance. Uni again made some early in-roads on the scoreboard but the Tigers responded in kind with their renowned fighting spirit. George Rowlands latched onto a couple more, Lewis Stutterd jagged one from the pocket and Shaun Glennen kicked his eighth and the Tigers 26th to finish the day and give St Bedes/Mentone Tigers what can best be described as a “foot stomping” victory.
Despite their endeavour and contest at the footy, the Reserves were well and truly outclassed by Uni Blues. The Under 19 Reds (Premier) turned it on in the third and fourth quarters to run away from Uni Blacks and record an emphatic 125 point victory while the Under 19 Blues (South) accounted for local rivals Parkdale Vultures to the tune of 5 goals. Amateur Football takes a break over the forthcoming Queen’s Birthday weekend. The Tigers next match is against St Bernards at Elsternwick Park on Sunday 17th June, commencing at 1:20pm.
