Q1 Lost the toss, kicked into the wind. Conditions were very windy and wet but this didn’t effect our on ball unit of Stone, Amon, & Johnson. We won the first few clearances with our long kicking. We had numerous shots on goal without capatilising. Swayn was working hard up forward taking some brilliant marks. Mitch Coen Kicked our first two goals and this meant we went into quarter time with a one goal lead. 2.4. 16 to 1.1. 7.
Q2 Kicking with the wind the instructions were to run and kick long. The Garside boys were leading the way with this out of the back line. James Mason and Tim Nixon were holding their opponents to nothing which meant Josh Green could get free to kick a goal from 45 metres out on the run. Stone and Johnson and Amon were combining beautifully in the midfield winning five centre clearances in a row, Dean Saunders was running hard and trying to break the lines as he does best. Tom Hurst had the tough role of tagging the league best & fairest player and was holding his own which allowed us to win a lot of ball around the stoppages. Foley, Hansen, & Johnson popped up as goalscores which meant we went into the half time break with a three goal lead which could have been more with accurate kicking. 6.8. 44 to 4.1. 25
Q3 The third quarter saw us absorbing a lot of Ormond’s pressure as they really took the game up to us. Jayden Rayner and Tom Wilson went up forward with his fresh legs and did a lot of chasing and tackling. Tom Maley was pushed into the back line to free up Lockie Doyle and was doing a brilliant job holding his man. Lockie went onto the ball and with his aggression was leading the way. Luke Hull in his 100th game was endeavouring to have an impact on the game but as the rain started to bucket down both teams started to struggle with their skills with each team kicking two points for the quarter. 6.10. 46 to 4.3. 27.
Q4 The boys ran out knowing very well that Ormond were going to come at them very hard and that they did…. Ormond started to get on top of us at the clearances and our pressure through the midfield started to disappear which meant that getting the ball up forward was a lot easier for Ormond. But with our back six holding – Ormond had to kick four goals in the last ten minutes to win. Ormond got a couple of interesting decisions from the umpires which lead to them kicking two goals. We really needed somebody to stand up and to take the game back to Ormond – Dan Garside endeavoured all day but late in the quarter sucuumbed to his calf injuries which had been nagging him all day. The midfield kept their endeavour up all day and their attack on the ball could never be questioned. Dylan Simpson ran off his line to body line the football and laid a very heavy bump on an Ormond player which lifted his teammates around him. Lee Cormie was pushed forward to see if he could sneak a goal and when the ball came in high and long Lee was in a perfect position to take the mark but with no body weight to hold him the Ormond player was able to push him in the back and win the ball. The pressure lifted around the stoppages and with about four minutes remaining and Ormond attacking very hard up stepped Lawrence Webb who busted open a pack to kick a goal on the run which gave us a 13 point lead with 3 minutes to go. The last 3 minutes were a frantic rush with Ormond throwing everything they had at us. The last minute saw all the St.Bedes players in Ormonds half of the ground scrapping and fighting to hang on which was lead by Tiernan Ravesi, Michael Seeber, and Cal Byrnes. Pat Wilson was strong at full back also Ormond took a mark about 40 metres out from goal but it was all too late as the siren sounded and we were up by 7 points. The Ormond boy kicked a point which meant the celebrations began for the Tigers with a 6 point victory. 7. 13. 55 to 7. 7. 49.
