St Bedes/Mentone Tigers went down to Old Xaverians after giving the visitors an early lead that the Tigers were ultimately, enable to bridge. With the breeze not a major factor, the damage was done in the first quarter were the Tigers found themselves 5 goals down at quarter time, despite some great endeavour. The remainder of the match was a very even affair, both on the scoreboard and in general play. Pat Kean delivered another breakout performance with 30 plus possessions in the midfield and Michael Curcio led the way up forward with strong leads and marking resulting in 4 goals. Down back Pat Tyquin gave the Tigers run off half back and Damien Waters shone in his new found role as a defender. At the conclusion of the match, both sides formed a guard of honour for goal umpire Kevin “Chilli” Segota who had just officiated in his 700th match. Kevin, a former student of St Bedes, joined the umpire ranks as a 17 year old, umpiring his first senior match in 1979 and his first grand final in 1980. His highly decorated career includes 1 A section, 3 B section and 3 C section grand finals as field umpire. Earlier in the day the St Bedes/Mentone Tigers Reserves well beaten By Old Xavs. The Under 19 Reds (Premier) were very competitive but fell short and the Under 19 Blues (South) dominated in their match against Hampton Rovers. Next Saturday St Bedes/Mentone Tigers head to Melbourne University to take on Uni Blues in an important match to both clubs.
