The Senior team powered their way into A Section for the first time in club history after they demolished Old Essendon in the B Section second semi-final at Elsternwick Park.
Skipper Luke Wintle across half forward was the first to give the tigers a kick start with a towering mark and long goal in the opening minutes. This signalled an open quarter blitz as the tigers added another seven goals for the quarter with full forward Paul Groves kicking three first quarter goals whilst Sam Hecker was proving a hand full for his opponent.
The Tigers game was hall marked as usual by its relentless tackling and smothering which continual saw the ball turned over by Old Essendon.
A nasty incident occurred before the start of the second quarter when half back David Kinsella was felled behind play. Kinsella was forced from the field with blood streaming from his face whilst his opponent was reported and sent from the ground.
This though ignited Old Essendon and they struck back with the aid of the breeze to close within four goals at the main break. The Tigers still managed to kick four against the breeze to hold a handy lead.
The Tigers could have sealed the game during the quarter as flanker Steve Kidd ran into three open goals and missed them all.
The first half had been dominated by the Tiger onballers with young Damien Waters dominating around the pacts along with Matt Hilton and Brendan Neville.
The third quarter saw some spectacular football as Essendon came out to kick five goals and close within 14 points. The tigers though were not to be out done.
Paul Wintle took the game by the neck with some towering marks to finish with five goals for the quarter. Ben Phibbs and Paul Groves topped of fine individual efforts with brilliant running goals from outside 50 to completely stifle the bombers run.
15 goals were kicked during the third quarter.
The final quarter saw the Tigers completely dismantle their opposition. Andrew Scafidi who has been invited to the VAFA B Section Vote count dominated the quarter with brilliant solos off the wing whilst Luke Terrell and Brendan Neville kicked two a piece to join the goal kickers.
After the Bombers got to within 14 points, the Tigers turned on the after burners and kicked 15 goals to four to run out convincing 83-point winner and earn elevation, plus a spot in the Grand Final.
Paul Groves kicked seven goals for the winners and Paul Wintle six.
The win sees St Bedes / Mentone climb through from F Section after joining the VAFA in 1972 to their first B Section Grand Final. The win elevates the club to A Section for the 2008 season.
The Tigers undefeated U19 side also won its Second Semi final against a determined Beaumaris. That win should also see the Tigers promoted to the Premier Division one competition next season as well.
