St Bedes Mentone Tigers moved to the top of the VAFA B section ladder after smashing Old Essendon at Brindisi St on Saturday. In front of a big crowd the tigers were ruthless, completely outclassing their opposition and securing the double chance in September. With the stakes high both sides threw their bodies on the line resulting in several physical confrontations. Once the dust settled the tigers steadied and applied relentless pressure on their opposition forcing costly errors. With Paul Groves on fire at full forward and live wire Ben Phibbs roaming the forward line the tigers kicked 6 first quarter goals whilst the visitors managed 3. At the break coach Luke Beveridge urged his troops to maintain their intensity and through the likes of versatile Nick Corda and winger Paul Wintle they did just that extending their lead to over 7 goals at the main break. After the main break the tigers ran riot pouring on the goals as they completely demolished the bombers running out eventual winners by 117 points. With the reserves and under 19’s also consolidating top ladder positions the tigers look well placed with 3 rounds remaining
