The St Bedes Mentone Tigers moved into top position of the VAFA ‘B’ section ladder with a massive 137 point victory over Old Melburnians on Saturday at the Brindisi St reserve.
The home side kicked into a stiff breeze in the first quarter and led at the first break by 2 goals. In the second quarter with captain Luke Wintle returning to the team following a serious pre season injury and Dean Francis providing 2 tall forward options the tigers poured on 11 goals in the second term to have the game under control at the main break.
Ben Phibbs continued his superb form kicking 5 of his 10 goal haul during this term whilst Brendan Brennan controlled the ruck providing first use of the ball to Chris Richards and the Scafidi brothers.
After half time the game continued to be a one sided affair with Paul Wintle and Dean Porter miserly in defence the tigers extended their lead against a side that had never travelled to the difficult to negotiate postage stamp sized oval.
SBMT coach Luke Beveridge was genuinely pleased with the result adding that the whilst the tigers were well placed they still have to tackle some difficult games in the coming weeks. This week former SBMT coach Russell Barnes will lead Beaumaris down to Brindisi St for what promises to be a block buster game in front a large periodical crowd keen to see the tigers continue their good form.
Historic Win!
