On ANZAC Day in front of the biggest crowd seen at the Mentone Oval in over 30 years, Old Scotch defeated St Bedes / Mentone Tigers by 33 points in a tough and skilful game
After a moving ceremony commemorating the ANZAC tradition, the Tigers and Old Scotch played an uncompromising first half of football with Scotch getting out to a 13 point lead in both quarters only to be pegged back by a determined SBMT outfit
The Tigers led by 1 point at the long break but were unable to staunch the flow as Old Scotch added 7 unanswered goals with regular centre clearances and outstanding linking handball and kicking
The Tiges drew to within 27 points after only 8 minutes of the final quarter and huge comeback seemed possible but Scotch steadied and, despite St Bedes pressing hard to the final bell, ran out comfortable and deserving winners
Best for the home team were Nick Corda and Tom Marks in defence and the hard-running Chris Richards
The ANZAC Day concept was an outstanding success shown by the size of the crowd, the respect for the occasion and the standard of football notwithstanding the Tigers’ first loss in ‘A’ Section
The Reserves won their second game at home by 26 points and the U19s had a resounding 14 goal win at St Bernards, Essendon
This week the Tigers journey to Bundoora to play Old Trinity who are also on 2 wins and 1 loss
