The senior side dodged a bullet at home against University Blues on Saturday.
The Tigers totally dominated the Blues in the first quarter but only held a 21 point buffer to show for it.
The second quarter was similar to the first, with Jack Hellier unstoppable off half back, but Blues while crowding the Tiger forward line began to run in numbers on the rebound to score valuable goals and keep the deficit manageable.
An upset was in the offing as Blues took control of the game in the second half and reduced the deficit to just 14 points at 3/4 time.
The last quarter resumed in the same vein as the University team peppered the goal and eventually drew to a deserved 3 point lead at the 18 minute mark but from that point the redoubtable Tigers wrested back control and, with Luke Wintle and Pete McGettigan marking everything in the air, the Tigers willed themselves over the line kicking the last 2.4 of the game to win by 13 points.
The U19s had a solid win by 15 points while the Club XVIII had another stong 39 point win to consolidate second position on the ladder.
The Tigers play ‘A’ Grade powerhouse Old Xaverians next week at Brindisi Street in what shapes as a ladder-defining game while the U19s journey to De La Salle for their long-awaited top-of-the-table clash with the undefeated ladder-leaders.
