St Bedes/Mentone Tigers again led from start to finish taking the 4 points from its Round 14 clash against St Bernards at Elsternwick Park. The Tigers kicked with the aid of the cold northerly in the first quarter, posting 4.2 to 0.0. Simon and Chris Richards and Dan and Tom Garside were in everything early, causing problems for both St Bernards and the commentators from 96.5 Inner FM. The second quarter was going to be interesting. Had the Tigers done enough with the breeze and how would St Bernards respond? Our boys down back responded in the best possible way, with the now clean shaven Dean Porter blanketing his dangerous opponent, Pat Tyquin providing plenty of run and the impassable Paul ‘Rat’ Wintle marking and repelling time and time again. Our run off half back was excellent and ultimately rewarded with 2 goals into the breeze. Debutant Dale Martin was showing he belonged and Shaun Glennen was at his elusive best and finished off the great work with silky skills. Six goals up at half time, the opposition yet to kick a major, but still plenty of work to do. The Tigers came out firing after the long break and put it beyond doubt. In the engine room new Dad Michael ‘Mouse’ Wintle was providing drive along with the Richards boys and Brett Denton. Darcy Holden was providing run, carry and delivery into the forward line where opportunities were snapped up by Shaun Glennen, George Rowlands, Luke Wintle and regular defender Jaryd Robertson. To their credit, St Bernards grabbed a couple into the breeze, but as they headed to the oranges, the Tigers 9 goal lead was always going to be enough.
St Bernards added 6 to the Tigers 3 in the last quarter to reduce the margin. Shaun Glennen finished with an outstanding 7.4 for the afternoon and Paul Wintle was voted best afield by the Inner FM radio team. Next week the Seniors will be looking to make it 3 in a row when they take on the winless Caulfield Grammarians at Glenhuntly Oval (Cnr Neerim & Booran Roads, North Caulfield, Melways 68 E4).
