St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers continued their winning run in VAFA Premier Division with another outstanding come-from-behind victory over University Blues at home on Saturday. University dominated the first 10 minutes of the game but found scoring impossible against the hard-tackling, ferocious Tigers who took the lead with 2 quick majors and then assumed control to take a comfortable 10 point lead into the short break. Not to be denied, Uni took up the challenge in the second and had the Mentone team on the back foot with hard running and slick ball movement and in spite of strong defence from Tiger skipper James Tyquin and youngster Dan Garside the Blues skipped away keeping the Tigers goalless while kicking 4 of their own to look likely winners with a 17 point lead after a dominant quarter. St Bedes refused to go away after the half but couldn’t make any impression on Blues who looked like they might be in for their first ever victory by the seaside as they took a 13 point lead into the final break, however, they had worked very hard for such a small lead and there were signs that they looked a little weary as the siren sounded on a very physical quarter of contested football. As expected this Tiger outfit was up for the scrap and applied enormous pressure to the tiring Uni boys and with Luke Wintle, Sam Anstey and Luke Collins supplying the drive out of the centre and around the ground the locals piled on the goals to snuff out the Students spirit and with a 6 goal to 2 final term had the Uni team continue their winless trips to Mentone while the Tigers remained undefeated in their 2011 campaign. The Reserves and U19s each found their ladder-leading opponents too talented and too good on the day. Next Saturday the Tigers take on VAFA Premier Division yardstick, Old Xaverians, at Brindisi Street to establish who is the early season challenger to runaway ladder-leaders, Collegians.
