St Bedes Mentone Tigers winning form continued on Saturday when they hosted local rival Beaumaris AFC at Brindisi St. The Tigers currently lead the VAFA ‘B’ section ladder and judging on their current form they should feature prominently in the September action. In front of large crowd, the Sharks were first out of the blocks and kicked 2 goals before Tigers were able to answer. At quarter time the home side through the continued brilliance of on ballers Sam Anstey and Andrew Scafidi had taken control and led by 3 goals. In the second term Sharks coach Russell Barnes adopted a 8 man defence in an attempt to strangle the free flowing tigers game plan. With goals proving difficult to score it was left to Port Melbourne listed player Dean Francis to consolidate the tigers lead with a booming 50 meter kick right on half time to break the shackles and give the local side a comfortable 5 goal lead. In the third term led ably by evergreen defender Dave Kinsella and exciting youngster Jack Hellier the tigers extended their lead and headed into the final quarter with a 36 point lead. At the break coach Luke Beveridge urged his players to remain creative and overcome the flooding tactics that the visitors were adopting and for the early part of the final stanza it appeared that an avalanche of goals was on the cards before the sharks consolidated with a late run of goals. Next Saturday the tigers take on Ajax at Elsternwick Park in a rematch of last September’s spectacular grand final, in what promises to be a terrific battle between the arch rivals of late.
