The trip to Harry Trott Oval to meet the reigning Premiers was always going to be a challenge. With the double chance already sewn-up, instead of relaxing, Collegians geared-up for the finals with their superb run and carry from defence. The Tigers’ defensive unit also stood up well, especially Jaryd Robertson’s marking, Pat Tyquin’s finesse and James Murnane’s tenacity. After a tight, even 1st Qtr, Collegians used the strong breeze to better effect than us in the 2nd Qtr; to lead by 32 points at the main break.
The Tigers struck back hard in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the home side to trail by only 1 goal going into the final Qtr and perhaps the scene was set for an upset. However, the Tigers’ hopes were dashed within 8 minutes after 5 goals were posted by the Purples. A final margin of 11 goals: one timid quarter marred an otherwise well contested match. The players would have learned 1st hand the value of “gut running” and precise ball use. Chris and Simon Richards led from the front with their endeavour and Damien “Spanky” Waters continued his fine form. Really encouraging was the performances of the newer players in following the Coach’s instructions and handling the pressure: James Murnane, Lewis Stutterd, Dale Martin and Alex Cross all made solid contributions.
Despite seeming competitive in general play, the Reserves were outgunned on the scoreboard. The U19 Red (Premier) team lost at their Round 18 encounter with St Bernards and will play them again in next week’s 1st semi final. The U19 Blue (South) team had a comfortable win over Monash Blues and will face Peninsula next week in their 1st semi final.
