The seniors were too strong for Old Scotch when they downed them by 46 points on another windy day at Brindisi Street on Saturday and thereby held second position on the ‘A’ Section ladder.
The Tigers took advantage of first use of a 5 goal northerly and with incisive attacking football and James Tyquin and Tim Mavrick providing great drive out of the middle banged on 7 goals 6 to a solitary point from the Cardinals.
In the second quarter the Tigers maintained the pressure and seemed to have the Scotchies measure half way through the term before the visitors got the scoreboard ticking and were full of run as the half-time siren sounded with the difference back to 23 points.
St Bedes came out after the long break intent on finishing the contest and with Andrew Scafidi back in touch and Luke Terrell finding the big opening the margin ballooned out to 62 points but Old Scotch refused to give in and continued to resist the tide.
In the last quarter, the Cardinals showed their character and fought manfully to the end but were ultimately unable to have any real impact on the final margin.
The Tigers’ Reserves had an excellent win by 29 points against the fourth side and now need to win the last game against De La to take their place in the ‘A’ Section finals for the first time ever.
Unfortunately, the U19s and U18s both just missed out on the finals finishing 6th and 5th respectively.
Next week the Tigers take on De La Salle at East Malvern and for the winner second place on the ladder and the coveted double chance – this game shapes as a classic as De La have been the pacesetters all year along with Old Xaverians while the seniors themselves have now won the last 8 on the trot, their last loss being to De La at Brindisi Street over two months ago.
