❤️❤️ @sbmtseniorwomens Today, each of us t ❤️❤️ @sbmtseniorwomens Today, each of us took the field wearing two red armbands — and they carry heavy meaning. The first armband is a protest. It’s a stand against the Victorian Government’s cuts to gender equality and violence prevention in sport. These cuts aren’t just budget lines — they’re setbacks to progress, to safety, and to the belief that sport can be a platform for positive change. Every dollar stripped from these programs weakens the safety net that helps prevent violence and supports those impacted. The second armband is for remembrance. It honours the 29 women who have already lost their lives this year in Australia due to gender-based violence. That’s more than one woman every week. These are not statistics — they are daughters, sisters, teammates, friends. And we will not forget them. Domestic violence doesn’t usually begin with a slap or a punch. It often starts with control — control over what someone wears, who they see, what they say. It grows in silence, in secrecy, in systems that excuse or ignore harmful behaviours. And too often, it ends in tragedy. But this is not just a women’s issue — it’s a community issue. It’s about the culture we accept, the conversations we start, and the standards we set, especially in spaces like footy clubs, which shape values and influence young minds. So what can we do? We call it out — sexist jokes, disrespectful language, coercive behaviour — no matter how “small” it seems. We educate ourselves and others on the signs of abuse. We listen and support survivors. And we demand better from our leaders, from our institutions, and from each other. We wear these armbands with pride, with purpose, and with the promise that we will never be silent on this issue. @notallclubs @sbmtseniorwomens
