We’re back! The 2023 season got under way on Saturday with Round 1 of the VAFA seeing our Senior Men, Reserves and three U19 teams in action.

It started early at Brindisi St where our U19 Premier team hosted Williamstown CYMS in a hard fought contest before ultimately prevailing by 19 points. Jack Behnk lead the way with 7 goals.

The Reserves Men started slowly in their contest against Ajax but worked themselves back into it to trail by 2 points at half time. Our boys cut loose in the third quarter kicking 7 unanswered goals and, while Ajax had a run of their own in the last, the Tigers prevailed by 10 points at the final siren. Ben Murphy’s 5 goals earnt him the Best On Ground nod.

In the Senior Men, Ajax again got going briskly to lead at the first change. Our boys wrestled back the ascendancy in the second quarter and were never headed from there, running out victors by 40 points. James Mangoni and Brayden O’Toole each contributed 4 majors with James earning the Best On Ground accolades.

Away from home, our U19 Division 2 team found it tough going against Glen Eira. After an even first quarter, we struggled to find avenues to goal. Joel Pratt lead from the front with a BOG performance.

Our U19 Division 4 team trekked to Essendon to take on St Bernard’s. After an even first quarter, the locals were just too strong despite our boys battling on. Ethan Higgins was judged best on ground, ably supported by Gabe Uberti and Harry Naughton.

The FIXTURE & RESULTS widget can be found in the top left corner of every page. It’s always there so you can keep track of your favourite teams. It includes match results, scores, best players goal kickers and upcoming matches.

This coming Saturday, 22nd April, the Senior Men travel to nearby Beaumaris with this and the return match being the only ‘local derby’ matches this season. At Southern Rd, the U19 Div 4 take on PEGS at 11:40 am followed by the U19 Div 2 lads against Parkside at 2 pm. Our U19 Premier team meet Old Xaverians at Stradbroke Park, Kew East.

At Brindisi St, our Women get their season underway, hosting Monash Blues. The Women’s Senior and Reserves 2022 premiership flags will be unfurled and all are welcome to join the celebratory lunch that commences at 11:30am. Get your tickets on TigerMart!

Then on Sunday, after what seems like an eternity for hundreds of hungry Tigers, the SMJFL (Junior) footy gets underway with matches at Brindisi St, Southern Rd and away. Parents please keep an eye on Team App for your last minute match details. Go Tigers!
