The seniors, reserves and U19’s all remain undefeated after five rounds. The seniors were comfortable 62 point winners over Fitzroy whilst the Reserves got home by 67 points. The U19’s beat Bentleigh by 85 points. The senior winning margin was not indicative of the game. The much awaited game against Fitzroy, who have been the preseason premiership favourites was tough.
They had 5 VFL players in their side. For the second week in a row we jumped out of the blocks and kicked 3.7 to nil midway through the first term. The game could have been over. Mid term Tiger winger Paul Groves, who had been dominating, was stretcher off and this signalled a Fitzroy revival. They kicked five unanswered goals to given them an unlikely quarter time lead.
The Tigers though blazed back in the second term with eight goals straight to take a commanding half time lead. The third quarter was tight before the Tigers once again put the foot on the pedal with 12 scoring shots to 1 in the last quarter and five goals.
The game was a tough encounter with the Reds serving it up to the Tigers. However each time they came close, the Tigers kicked away.
The game was a high standard with brilliant passages of handball resulting in goals.
Big plus was the form of rising starts Aaron Sawers (roving) and Damian Waters (half Forward). Both played sensational games.
Skipper Luke Wintle dominated in the air with several spectacular marks. David Kinsella was crucial the Tigers win when moved on to the Reds Full forward who had looked dangerous early.
Andrew Hayes was another star picking up kicks at will …… along with Sam Anstey, Tim McColl and Michael Wintle the tiger midfield was too strong for Fitzroy. Diminutive Andrew Scafidi backed up last week’s fine performance with another four goals whilst James Tyquin kicked another three from the wing.
