SBMT Vs Old Carey

The Tigers showed they deserved their place in the competitive VAFA Development Division 2 when they took on the Old Carey Panthers at Southern Road on Saturday. Old Carey had won their last encounter by 127 points. Down on numbers, but not in spirit, the St.Bede’s girls held off a fast finishing Old Carey to win their first game of VAFA Development Division 2. Good umpiring allowed for an open contest, played in good spirit by both teams. A good number of spectators from both camps saw Old Carey post the first goal, but two quick replies by St.Bedes saw them lead into the first break. The second quarter saw the Tigers increase their lead with some great inside work around the stoppages by Kate Dempsey and Gen Barns-Dunne. The Tigers dominated clearances to lead by 12 going into the half time break with the Panthers adding only two behinds.  Strong defence by first gamer Bridie Malone and Maddy Buck held out Old Carey through the third quarter and the Tigers took a well deserved lead of 16 points going into the final quarter. Fresh legs from the visiting Panthers bench saw them pick up momentum and only a great end-to-end team goal and dogged defence held them outwith St.Bedes going on to win by the smallest of margins
