Womens Team 2017 croppedWomens team Rd 1 2017 croppedSt Bedes/Mentone Tigers Women opened their account for the season with a strong performance against Old Mentonians in front of a die-hard group of supporters at Brindisi St.

The match was played in wet-weather conditions with a heavy storm coming through during the half-time break. Despite having several key players absent due to injuries and the dreadful weather, Jaymie Summers opened the scoring for SBMT with an opportunist’s first quarter goal. The wind changed in the second quarter with Old Mentonians scoring but being held to only one goal; while the difficult conditions caused several scoring opportunities for the Tigers to miss the big sticks. Meg Geschke and the dominant ruckwork from Chloe Clarke kept pushing the ball back into the Tiger’s scoring zone.
The second half turned into a wet weather “slog” with solid defence from Elsie Martin and Monica Tran turning every attempt by Old Mentonians to push forward. The visitors failed to score for the remainder of the match while the Tigers fought out a solid 1-12-18 to OM 1-1-7 win. Thirteen scoring shots to two demonstrating the SBMT Women’s dominance of the game and resulted in second position in Grading Group 6.
Goal: Jaymie Summers
Best: Meg Geschke, Rebecca McMullin, Mikala Sykes, Gen Barns-Dunne, Chloe Clake, Elsie Martin
